If you’re interested in becoming a trucker, you’re probably quite fond of driving. You might daydream about cruising down the highway, admiring the changing landscape, and relishing the fact that your job doesn’t require you to sit behind a desk from 9 to 5. And because we live in a huge, diverse country, you’ll be treated to a variety of gorgeous scenery in your job as a trucker. From the California Coast to the country roads of West Virginia, there’s so much to see and admire. Where will your routes take you? We can’t be sure, but we hope you get a chance to explore some of the best highways in the US.
The Most Beautiful Routes in America
I-64 in West Virginia
There’s a reason John Denver crooned about West Virginia in his classic “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” The state’s rolling green hills and picturesque sunsets make this section of I-64 a favorite among truckers. There’s also a popular rest stop, Tamarack Marketplace, just off Beckley, where you can stretch your legs and learn a little about Appalachian culture and craftsmanship.
I-70 through Utah and Colorado
With its vast deserts, rocky cliffs, fantastic rock formations, and deep canyons, this stretch of I-70 is indisputably dramatic. It can be a bit treacherous in winter due to frequent snowstorms, but many truckers consider it one of the best highways in the US during the summertime. Plus, there’s a lengthy 500-mile stretch from Colorado to Utah, so you’ll have lots of time to admire the stunning landscape. On a sunny day, there’s nothing better!
Pacific Coast Highway in California
If you enjoy a coastal view, you can’t do much better than the Pacific Coast Highway, which winds its way up the California coast. It offers fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean and passes by a variety of charming seaside cities, including Malibu, Sausalito, Santa Barbara, and San Francisco. Although it’s not always truckers’ first choice, as it’s not the most direct route, everyone should drive it at least once.
Westbound from Montana to Idaho
Do we really need to explain why this is one of the best highways in the US? From the breathtaking snow-capped mountains to the evergreen forests and tranquil meadows, the Mountain West is filled with epic landscapes. It’s especially gorgeous in the fall when the aspen trees turn vibrant shades of yellow and gold, giving the route an unforgettable sunny glow. As long as the weather cooperates (keep an eye on the forecast, especially in winter, when heavy snowfall or dangerous wind gusts could disrupt your plans), this route always makes for a lovely trip.
Seward Highway in Alaska
Although many truckers remain in the contiguous United States for the entirety of their careers, those who venture up to Seward Highway in Alaska certainly don’t regret it. Not only does it provide spectacular views of the nearby mountains and ocean, but also it’s easy driving for truckers due to the low population of our northernmost state: a relaxing yet awe-inspiring drive. Favorite points along the route include Turnagain Arm, Moose Pass, and Beluga Point.
